Where did the Scottish Barr family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Barr family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The Strathclyde-Briton people of ancient Scotland were the first to use the name Barr. The Barr family lived in Ayrshire, where the family was found since the early Middle Ages. It is generally thought to have been a habitational name, taken on from any of various place names in southwestern Scotland, in particular in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire. These place names derive from the Gaelic word barr, meaning "height," or "hill."

Medieval Scottish names are rife with spelling variations. This is due to the fact that scribes in that era spelled according to the sound of words, rather than any set of rules. Barr has been spelled Barr, Barre and others.

First found in Ayrshire, where they have been found since ancient times.

Many Scots were left with few options other than to leave their homeland for the colonies across the Atlantic. Some of these families fought to defend their newfound freedom in the American War of Independence. Others went north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. The ancestors of all of these families have recently been able to rediscover their roots through clan societies and other Scottish organizations. Among them: Roger Barr, who settled in Virginia in 1655; Robt Barr, who came to New England in 1718; Gabriel Barr, who came to New Hampshire in 1720; George Barr, who settled in Maryland in 1761.
