Prior to the first dictionaries, scribes spelled words according to sound. This, and the fact that Scottish names were repeatedly translated from Gaelic to English and back, contributed to the enormous number of spelling variations in Scottish names. Young has been spelled Young, Younge, Yonge, Yong, Yung, Youngson and others.
First found in the borderlands between Scotland and England; the name was first borne in this region by a Strathclyde-Briton family, as revealed in records dating back to the 13th century.
In such difficult times, the difficulties of raising the money to cross the Atlantic to North America did not seem so large compared to the problems of keeping a family together in Scotland. It was a journey well worth the cost, since it was rewarded with land and freedom the Scots could not find at home. The American War of Independence solidified that freedom, and many of those settlers went on to play important parts in the forging of a great nation. Among them: Richard Young and his wife, who settled in Virginia in 1623; as did Edward and Jane Young in 1636; Joseph and Margaret Young, who immigrated to New England with their two sons in 1635.
Motto Translated: Prudence excels strength.

Young Clan Badge
A clan is a social group made up of a number of distinct branch-families that actually descended from, or accepted themselves as descendants of, a common ancestor. The word clan means simply children. The idea of the clan as a community is necessarily based around this idea of heredity and is most often ruled according to a patriarchal structure. For instance, the clan chief represented the hereditary "parent" of the entire clan. The most prominent example of this form of society is the Scottish Clan system...
