Where did the Scottish Brown family come from? What is the Scottish coat of arms/family crest? When did the Brown family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

In most instances, the Brown family name came to England with the Norman Conquest of England of 1066. Deriving from the Old French, Middle English "brun," it was originally a nickname for someone who may have had brown hair, brown eyes, or perhaps even dressed habitually in brown. It is also possible that some instances of the name in Britain derived from a short form of an Old English personal name of Germanic roots, such as Brunwine or Brungar.

Spelling variations of this family name include: brown and others.

First found in Cumberland, where the Brown family was seated from very early times, having been granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. This region vacillated between Scottish and English rule until the mid-12th century.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Abigail Brown, who settled in Maryland in 1668; Alex Brown, who immigrated to Boston in 1763; Richard Brown, who came to Maryland in 1774; Hugh Brown and his wife Margory, who emigrated from Scotland to Philadelphia in 1775.
