Prior to the Norman Conquest, this name was rarely found, but by the 13th and 14th centuries, it became extremely common in Britain. Those Welsh families that survived the long ocean journey were critical to the development of new industries and factories, and to the quick settlement of land. They also added to an ever-growing rich cultural heritage. A search of the immigration and passenger lists has shown a number of people bearing the name Tomasso: Mr. Thomason who settled in Virginia in 1649; Alex Thomason settled in Virginia in 1740; followed by Moses Thomason in the same year; John Thomason settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1818.
