Where did the German Haynes family come from? What is the German coat of arms/family crest? When did the Haynes family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The surname Haynes is derived from the Old German word hagen, which means hawthorne or hedge. In medieval Germany, hedges were commonly used to mark out one parcel of land from another; if a piece of land was being farmed, it was surrounded by a hedge more often than not. The word hagen became synonymous with an enclosed piece of land, and it is from that meaning that the name is derived. The name is a local name, given to one living on land enclosed by a hawthorne hedge.
