First found in Normandy where this distinguished family were anciently seated in the castle and barony of Lahaie-du-Puits in the arrondissement of Coutance from about the year 890. But the annals of the family only start about 1066 when the Sire Eudo de Lahaie accompanied Duke William of Normandy in his conquest of England. He became a great baron and possessed vast estates in Sussex, Essex and Suffolk, and died in 1098, and the Norman branch of the family continued to flourish.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Norman Lahay who settled in Virginia in 1649; Jacques LaHaye settled in Louisiana in 1752; Marie Anne Lahaye settled with her husband Pierre Gervais in Louisiana in 1756..
