Where did the English Thomas family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Thomas family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

Thomas is derived from a Medieval given name of biblical origin that was popular throughout Europe. In Britain, most instances of the name as a surname came with the Norman invasion; however it also likely that Thomas was also created as a surname from pre-Norman English given names.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Thomas, Tomas, MacThomas, FitzThomas, Thomasett and others.

First found in Goucestershire, Lincolnshire, and Hamptonshire where Thomas of Bayeux (1070-1100,) Bishop of Worcester and Archbishop of York, held land as listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. After the Norman invasion, Thomas became one of the most popular Christian names, and then in turn as a surname usage began to increase.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Joe, John, Robert, and Nathaniel Thomas, who all settled in Virginia in 1621; as did Christopher Thomas in 1635 and Evan Thomas in 1653; Bary Thomas, who left Bristol for America between the years 1654-1679.
