This place-name is in turn derived from the Old English words "lumm" which means "pool," and "halh," which means nook or recess.

First found in Lancashire where they were seated from very early times. It is thought that the ancestors of the bearers of Loomis predated Duke William of Normandy and the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Edward Loomis, who arrived in Boston in 1635; Hannah Loomis, who came to New England in 1638; Joseph Loomis, who came to Boston in 1638; Ephraim Loomis, his wife Desiah and their four children, who arrived in Nova Scotia in 1760.
