THE COSSACKS

An important period in Ukrainian folk culture began in the 15th century, with the emergence of the Cossacks. The Cossacks were frontiersmen who gathered into bands to fend off the Mongols from the Crimean Khanate, and the Ottoman Turks, and to make the territory of the Ukraine open to settlement. Initially, the Cossack bands were gathered only when necessary, but the bands and their fortified camps eventually became a permanent way of life in the region surrounding the Dnieper basin. In 1553-54, groups of Cossacks were gathered below the Dnieper rapids and the foundations for the Zaporozhian Sich were established. Cossack society was to some degree democratic and egalitarian; however, class distinction soon developed. The Zaporozhians and other Cossacks gained popular appeal through daring raids on the Tatars and rebellions against the Poles.

The Ukrainian intelligentsia emerged in the 19th century and helped to forge a strong sense of national identity for the Ukrainian people. After the European Revolutions of 1848, the concept of "nationhood," or nationalism, developed within the intelligentsias of both eastern and western European societies. The recently formed and newly emerging European nations were composed of people who recognized themselves as entities by virtue of their historical, linguistic or ethnic links. All of the new nations united their people under a particular political organization and occupied a defined territory on the continent. In the second half of the 19th century, European intellectuals began to advocate devotion to one's nation and national unity as a cohesive ideology for their new nations.

EARLY ORIGINS PART 2

The Ukraine, which means borderland, is located between Europe, Russia, and Asia, on the northern shore of the Black Sea. From a country of vast steppes, rich black earth, and endless fields of wheat, the Ukrainian people possess a cultural heritage known for its vitality and diversity. Ukrainian folk arts, such as pottery, embroidery, and painted Easter eggs, reflect national customs and conventions. A myriad of Ukrainian myths and legends describe national symbols and characteristics such as the black earth, the clan or extended family life, and Orthodox religion. Nonetheless, Ukrainian culture has been heavily influenced by the traditions of other nations because its history is characterized by invasions, political oppression, and foreign domination.
