Origin Displayed: English-Alt Origins Available: English-Alt, English Spelling variations of this family name include: Scawen, Scawan, Scawell and others. First found in Cornwall where they were Lords of the Manor of Melenick in that shire and were anciently seated, some say, before the Norman Conquest in the year 1066. Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Richard Scawell, who arrived in the Barbados in 1680 with his servants; as well as Charles Scawen, who arrived in New England in 1765.
