CHINA: CULTURAL ORIGINS

CHINESE LITERATURE

After thousands of years of unity the Chinese population is suprisingly not a homogeneous entity. Many dialects exits within the Chinese language and these are grouped into the following divisions - Mandarin, Wu, Min, Hakka and Cantonese. As with any linguistic dialects these exist within associated geographical regions. Mandarin is designated as standard Chinese and it is spoken by aproximately 3/4 of the population of China. All dialects use the same written characters.

THE CHINESE DYNASTIES

The Shang dynasty (1766-1122 BC or 1523-1027 BC) is the earliest period of Chinese civilization for which reliable historical evidence exists. Before this, tradition states that the Chinese people originated in the Hwang Ho valley. The creator Pan-Ku was succeed by a series of heavenly and human sovereigns with the first hereditary dynasty, the Hsia, established in about 2000 BC and overthrown by the Shang. The Shang civilization was in the territory of the present provinces of Honan, Hupei, Shantung and part of Anhwei.

CHINA: A BRIEF HISTORY


THE MONGOLS

The Mongols were a powerful nomadic tribe of the Asian Steepes and their vast empire extended into China, India and central Europe during the 12th to 16th centuries. In 1206, Mongolia was conquered by Ghengis Chan and it became the center of the vast Mongol empire. Ghengis Chan, the founder of the empire, was the most feared military leader of his time. His conquests were so immense and his influence so absolute that he was able to achieve an almost mythic status during his own lifetime. He ruled from 1206 to 1227 and during that time, his empire steadily expanded across Asia in a series of ruthless military conquests. The Mongols thrived on hardships and primitive fertility. They lived in tents or the open air, followed their herds to fresh pastures, clothed themselves in oxhides, and studied with relish the arts of war. They were experts with the dagger and swords and arrows aimed from their flying steeds.

THE PHILOSOPHERS

The most influential philosopher of the period was K'ung-fu-tzu or Confucius. In essence, Confucius called for a restoration of early Chou institutions for he felt that the rulers of that period had created an ideal society through the example of great personal virtue. He therefore attempted to create a class of virtuous gentlemen who could take over high positions of government. The doctrines of Taoism were also set down in this Period of the Warring States, and legalism, a third school of political thought also developed.
