First found in Polesie, the largest province of Poland. It is inhabited by Ruthenians, called Polesians, of Ukrainian descent.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Barb. Urbansky, who came to New York in 1871; Franz Urbanski, who arrived in Baltimore in 1882; and Valentin Urbanski, who arrived a year later, and Adam Urbanski, who settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1897 with his wife Catherina and their son Nicholas.
