Some families of this name, being oppressed by the Norman invaders, moved north over the Scottish border and were granted lands by the Scottish King. Early records of the name include a bearer of Tunne listed in Lincolnshire in the Domesday Book of 1066; Gilbertus filius Tunny listed in 1219 in the Assize Rolls of Yorkshire; Simon Tunnie, listed in 1327 in the Assize Rolls of Staffordshire; and an Alan filius Tunnoc listed in the 12th century in the Feodarium Prioratus Dunelmensis.
