First found in the province of Mecklenburg, where the name was closely identified in early mediaeval times with the feudal society which would become prominent throughout European history. The name can be traced in this region back to 1506, when they were vassals to the Prince von Werle. They would later emerge as a noble family with great influence, having many distinguished branches, and become noted for its involvement in social, economic and political affairs. Chronicles first mention Friedrich Trost of Hamburg in 1260, Waczlaw Trost of Prag in 1375, and Fridel Troestel of Prague in 1359.
