Where did the English Silverwood family come from? What is the English Silverwood family crest and coat of arms? When did the Silverwood family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the Silverwood family history?

The English surname Silverwood is of several distinct origins. Firstly, it is derived from the Old English "silfor," meaning "silversmith"; in this instance, the progenitor of the name would have been someone who practiced this profession. Alternatively, the name may be derived from the Old English "seolfre," meaning "silvery stream," and would in this case refer to someone who lived by such a stream.

First found in Hertfordshire, where the family was anciently seated as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066; the language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. However, the Anglo-Saxon surname Silverwood survived and the family was first referenced in the 13th century, when it held estates in that shire. The earliest known bearer of the name was John Siluer, who was listed in the Book of Seals for Lincolnshire in 1205.
