Chronicles first mention Volkwin Runge of Rostock, Mecklenburg, around 1280, Hartmut Runge of Speyer in 1283, and Wilreich Runge of Neisse in 1487. Always prominent in social affairs, the Runge family became an integral part of that turbulent region, as it emerged to form alliances with other families within the feudal system.
