Where did the English Rosdale family come from? What is the English Rosdale family crest and coat of arms? When did the Rosdale family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the Rosdale family history?

The Rosdale name has descended through the generations from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. Their name comes from having lived in the village of Rosindale near Clitheroe in the county of Lancashire. The surname was originally derived from two elements, rosen meaning roses and dahl referring to a valley. In this case the original bearers of the surname lived in a valley full of roses.

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Rosdale were among those contributors: Samuel Rosdail who settled in New York State with his wife and four children in 1825; Thomas Rosdell settled in Virginia in 1635; Frederick and Maria Rosendal arrived in Philadelphia in 1806.
