The name Roges reached English shores for the first time with the ancestors of the Roges family as they migrated following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name Roges is based on the Old French given name Rogier, which meant famous spear.

Early Origins of the Roges family

The surname Roges was first found in Aberdeenshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain), a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland from ancient times, some say as early as the 11th century. According to Camden, the noted historian of the 16th century, this name Roger was a valiant captain who came to England, thence to Scotland from Normandy in the train of William, Duke of Normandy and was at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. This is most likely to be Roger, Earl of Hereford, who was forfeited in 1075 and moved north into Scotland after the devastation of the northland by Duke William. The name is sometimes interpreted from MacRory, or the son of Rory but it is more likely to be from Hrothgar.

Migration of the Roges family

Faced with the chaos present in England at that time, many English families looked towards the open frontiers of the New World with its opportunities to escape oppression and starvation. People migrated to North America, as well as Australia and Ireland in droves, paying exorbitant rates for passages in cramped, unsafe ships. Many of the settlers did not make the long passage alive, but those who did see the shores of North America were welcomed with great opportunity. Many of the families that came from England went on to make essential contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America carried the name Roges, or a variant listed above: James Rodgeson who settled in Virginia in 1637; Theodore and Ellin Rogerson settled in Virginia in 1635; Richard settled in New England in 1706; Jannet Rogerson settled in St. John Island in 1774.
