Where did the English Rainesforde family come from? What is the English Rainesforde family crest and coat of arms? When did the Rainesforde family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the Rainesforde family history?

The Rainesforde name has descended through the generations from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. Their name comes from having lived in the chapelry of Rainford in the parish of Prescot in Lancashire. The surname Rainesforde is a habitation name which forms a broad category of surnames that were derived from place-names. They were derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. In this case the surname Rainesforde was originally derived from the Old English Regnaforde which refers to those individuals who lived by the ford. However, there is also evidence that the name in fact referred to Danish settlers, who came from Randers Fiord, Denmark.

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Rainesforde were among those contributors: Edward Rainsford and his wife, who settled in Salem Massachusetts in 1630; Captain Rainford, who settled in Jamaica in 1774, with his wife and three children.
