The name was first recorded in Antwerp, (Anvers.Fr) a fortified city in the province of Antwerp. It is Belgium's commercial center. In the 11th century Godfrey of Bouillon was Marquis of Antwerp. In their later history the surname became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into a most influential family.
