First found in Lincolnshire, where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Panton at the time of Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066 A.D. Conjecturally they are descended from Gilbert of Panton, a Norman noble who held the village from the Archbishop of York at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book survey in the year 1086 A.D. The village consisted of a Church and a few houses.
