Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Prominent among the early explorers of the New World was Diego de Herrera, who voyaged to New Spain in 1561; and journeyed from there to the Philippines, where he was co-founder of the city of Manila in 1571. Also of note were Luis de Herrezuelo, who accompanied Pedro de Mendoza to the Río de la Plata then continued on to Paraguay, and Vasco de Herrera, a sixteenth century Governor of Honduras.
