Early Origins of the Marchese family

The surname Marchese was first found in Gascony (French: Gascogne), an area of southwest France bordering Spain, that was part of the "Province of Guyenne and Gascony" prior to the French Revolution, where the family has been a prominent family for centuries, and held a family seat with lands and manor. The family were well established in the region of Béarn and several members of the family distinguished themselves through their contributions toward the community in which they lived and were rewarded with lands, titles and letters patent confirming their nobility. The family became the Barons Marches in 17th July 1751. Later they were elevated to the Counts of Ballegard.
