Their name comes from the Gaelic form of Absolom, which means peace. Historically this name can be found in The Bible, as the name of the third son of King David, who was killed for rebellion against his father. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first MacAuslins to arrive on North American shores: James MacCausland settled in Philadelphia in 1820; Andrew MacCausland settled in Philadelphia in 1773; Conolly, James, John, Oliver, Susannah, and William MacCausland all arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between 1840 and 1860.. The motto was originally a war cry or slogan. Mottoes first began to be shown with arms in the 14th and 15th centuries, but were not in general use until the 17th century. Thus the oldest coats of arms generally do not include a motto.
