Further research showed the name was derived from the Old English words lead and beatere, meaning literally "he who beats lead." This made the occupation of leadbeater an important one in the Middle Ages.Until the dictionary, an invention of only the last few hundred years, the English language lacked any comprehensive system of spelling rules.
