Where did the English laswell family come from? What is the English laswell family crest and coat of arms? When did the laswell family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the laswell family history?

The name laswell arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The laswell family lived in the village of Lacella in the French region of Orne, where they were titled the Barons of Messie. The family name laswell was brought to England after the Norman Conquest, when William the Conqueror gave his friends and relatives most of the land formerly owned by Anglo-Saxon aristocrats. At this time, the Old English naming system gradually dissolved. Old English names became less common and were replaced by popular continental European names. The Normans frequently identified themselves by reference to the estates from which they came from in Northern France, as in the case of the name laswell. The surname was established by Norman landholders in the county of Yorkshire.

A multitude of spelling variations characterize Norman surnames. Many variations occurred because Old and Middle English lacked any definite spelling rules. The introduction of Norman French to England also had a pronounced effect, as did the court languages of Latin and French. Therefore, one person was often referred to by several different spellings in a single lifetime. The various spellings include Lascelles, Lassells, Lascell, Lassell, Lasselle, Lasell, Laselle, Lascelle, Lasceles, Lacelles, Lassels, Lacelles, Lacells, Lascells, Lasselis, Lescellis, Lessels and many more.

First found in Yorkshire, where the family settled after emigrating from France to England. The laswell family held estates in this county from the Middle Ages.

Many English families left England, to avoid the chaos of their homeland and migrated to the many British colonies abroad. Although the conditions on the ships were extremely cramped, and some travelers arrived diseased, starving, and destitute, once in the colonies, many of the families prospered and made valuable contributions to the cultures of what would become the United States and Canada. Research into the origins of individual families in North America has revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name laswell or a variant listed above:
