A family in the Pictish tribe of ancient Scotland was the first to use the name Killman. They lived at Kelman Hill, which is in the Cabrach in the county of Aberdeen.

In medieval Scotland, names were more often spelled according to sound than any regular set of rules. An enormous number of spelling variations were the result. Over the years, the name Killman has been spelled Kelman, Kilman and others.

First found in Aberdeenshire, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
