Where did the English Kellane family come from? What is the English Kellane family crest and coat of arms? When did the Kellane family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the Kellane family history?

Of all the Anglo-Saxon names to come from Britain, Kellane is one of the most ancient. The name is a result of the original family having lived in the now-lost settlement of Kelland Barton in the county of Devon. The surname Kellane belongs to the large category of Anglo-Saxon habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

The first dictionaries that appeared in the last few hundred years did much to standardize the English language. Before that time, spelling variations in names were a common occurrence. The language was changing, incorporating pieces of other languages, and the spelling of names changed with it. Kellane has been spelled many different ways, including Kelland, Kellands, Kellan, Kellen, Keland, Kelan, Kelane, Kellane, Keeland, Kealand, Kellend and many more.

First found in Devon where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Painsford in Asprington, some say before the Norman Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066 A.D. Professor Seary of Newfoundland suggests that there was also a Kelland Barton in Devon but he has been unable to find it. This may have been a family tradition.

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Kellanes to arrive in North America: Michael Kelan settled in Boston Massachusetts in 1848; Charles Kellen also settled in Boston Massachusetts the same year; Teresa Kellen settled in San Francisco Cal. in 1852. In Newfoundland, Canada, Mary Kelland settled at Scilly Cove in 1792.
