Spelling variations of this family name include: Hornberg, Hornberger, Hornburg, Hornburgh and others.

First found in Austria, where this family name became a prominent contributor to the development of the district from ancient times. Always prominent in social affairs, the family name became an integral part of that turbulent region as it emerged to form alliances with other families within the Feudal System and the nation. The name is a compound name derived from the Old High German words "horn" and "berg," and has several derivations. Horn was used as an occupational name for someone who made small articles from horn, or a musician who played a horn. It was also a topographic name referring to a horn-shaped hill; "berg" also refers to a hill. Many have also adopted this name as a habitation name for one of the several places in Germany so-named.
