Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Hecox or a variant listed above: Captain Hickcocke settled in Virginia in 1623; Otis Hickok, an emigrant from Ireland, who fought in the War of 1812 and settled in Vermont; and M. Hickox settled in San Francisco in 1850..
