The name Goron arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Goron family lived in the places named Goring in Oxfordshire and Sussex. The place-name was originally derived from the Old English word Garingas, which means people of Gara. This name is a short form of various compound names with the first portion gar, which means spear.

A multitude of spelling variations characterize Norman surnames. Many variations occurred because Old and Middle English lacked any definite spelling rules. The introduction of Norman French to England also had a pronounced effect, as did the court languages of Latin and French. Therefore, one person was often referred to by several different spellings in a single lifetime. The various spellings include Goring, Gorring, Goringe, Gorringe, Goreing and many more.

First found in Sussex where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Goring. At the time of the taking of the Domesday Book in 1086, a census initiated by Duke William of Normandy after his conquest of England in 1066, Goring was a village held by Robert from tenant in chief Earl Roger. Conjecturally Robert was the founder of this family name.
