Where did the English Dustin family come from? What is the English Dustin family crest and coat of arms? When did the Dustin family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the Dustin family history?

The roots of the Anglo-Saxon name Dustin come from when the family resided near a stony hill. Dustin is derived from two Old English elements: dun and stan. Dun was a word for hill, and stan meant "stony." The translation of the name is therefore "stony hill." It is also possible that the name is patronymic; that is, derived from the name of a parent. Dunstan was a popular given name in England in the Middle Ages.

The English language only became standardized in the last few centuries; therefore, spelling variations are common among early Anglo-Saxon names. As the form of the English language changed, even the spelling of literate people's names evolved. Dustin has been recorded under many different variations, including Dunstan, Dunston, Dunstone, Dunstane, Donston, Dunstavill and many more.

First found in Cornwall where they held a family seat from very ancient times. The earliest reference of the name was of Dunstan (c.909 - 988,) who was an Abbot of Glastonbury, a Bishop of Worcester, a Bishop of London, and an Archbishop of Canterbury. He was later canonized as a saint.

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Dustin or a variant listed above:
