This Irish family was one of the Tribes of Galway, who came from England to the Emerald Isle. The Dean surname was derived from one of several place names, which were in turn derived from the Old English word "denu," which means "valley." This Old English word has also given rise to other local names such as West Dean in Sussex, Deane in Hampshire and Dean in Essex.
