First found in Bari in Apulia. Capital city of Bari. Contains the Cathedral of S.Sabino begun in 1034. In Roman times it was the junction between the coast road and Via Traiana. Its harbor is mentioned back in 180 B.C. It was a crusader town occupied by the Norman Robert Guiscard in 1071. It later acquired prosperity under Frederick II. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was of itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry.
