Where did the Scottish Bruchs family come from? What is the Scottish Bruchs family crest and coat of arms? When did the Bruchs family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the Bruchs family history?

The noble Viking settlers who came to the rocky shores of Scotland in the Middle Ages brought with them the ancestors of the Bruchs family. They lived in the places named Overbrough and Netherbrough in Harray, in the Orkney Islands. It is believed that the origins of the Bruchs name are Norse, but it is not known if the place or personal name came first.

Scottish names from the Middle Ages vary enormously in their spellings. This is a result of the fact that there were no universal standards like dictionaries for scribes to judge by. The recorded spelling variations of the name Bruchs include Brough, Burgh, Brugh, Broughe, Burghe, Brughe, Bruche and many more.

First found in the Orkneys, where they held a family seat from very ancient times.

Settlers found farms all along the eastern part of what would become the United States and Canada. They provided a base and a backbone that would strengthen two great nations in the making. In the 20th century, the ancestors of those brave Scots have rediscovered their heritage through highland games and Scottish historical societies. Early North American immigration records have revealed a number of people bearing the Scottish name Bruchs or a variant listed above, including: Edward Brough settled in Virginia in 1642; James Brough settled in Jamaica in 1685; George Brough settled in Savannah, Georgia in 1774; with his wife Barbara, three sons and a daughter.
