Where did the Scottish Bogg family come from? What is the Scottish Bogg family crest and coat of arms? When did the Bogg family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the Bogg family history?

In the Middle Ages, Viking immigrants settled the shores of Scotland and named many places. The Bogg name was then created from one of these place names. They lived in a place noted for the presence of a ridge that formed a boundary between two distinct areas. It comes from a variant of the word boak or balk, of the same meaning. While historians generally agree upon the aforementioned topographical derivation, most believe that this name actually came from the area called Boak in the parish of Kirkholm.

Intuition and sound were the primary sources medieval scribes used to judge appropriate spellings and translations for names. The spelling of a name thus varied according to who was doing the recording. The different spelling variations of Bogg include Boag, Boig, Book, Boack, Boge, Bogue, Boak, Bouk, Bouck, Bogues, Bogg, Boggs and many more.

First found in Berwickshire, where they held a family seat from ancient times, long before the Norman Conquest in 1066.

In their new home, Scots found land and opportunity, and some even fought for their new freedom in the American War of Independence. Some, who remained loyal to the crown went north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. In this century, the ancestors of both of these groups have begun recovering their illustrious national heritage through Clan societies and other Scottish historical organizations.
