Where did the English Asswode family come from? What is the English Asswode family crest and coat of arms? When did the Asswode family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the Asswode family history?

The Asswode surname is derived from the Old English words "oesc," meaning ash, and "wudu," meaning wood. It comes from the class of local names, or names that are based on where the original bearer of the name lived. Asswode may have originally been born by someone who lived by an ash wood, or the name may have come from a village or place so called. In some instances, the name may be a spelling variation of Ashworth.

The English language only became standardized in the last few centuries; therefore, spelling variations are common among early Anglo-Saxon names. As the form of the English language changed, even the spelling of literate people's names evolved. Asswode has been recorded under many different variations, including Ashwood, Ashwode, Assewode, Asswode, Asswood and others.

First found in Lancashire.

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Asswode or a variant listed above: Richard Ashwood, who arrived in Maryland in 1678; John Ashwood, an emigrant in bondage, who arrived in America in 1713; Allis Ashworth, listed as a runaway convict servants in Maryland in 1774.
