The annals of Scottish history reveal that Arrel was first used as a name by descendants of the Pictish tribe of ancient Scotland. The Arrel family lived in the lands of Errol (Arroll) in Perthshire.

The surname Arrel was first found in Perthshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Pheairt) former county in the present day Council Area of Perth and Kinross, located in central Scotland, where they held a family seat in the parish of Errol from whence they get their name. The family is not directly related to the Lords of Errol, who are in fact a part of the Scottish Hay clan.
