Early Origins of the Zedlitz family

The surname Zedlitz was first found in Silesia, where the Zedlitz family was one of the most ancient and respected aristocratic families. They made great contributions to the feudal society which became the backbone of early development of Europe. They branched into many houses, which played important roles in the widespread national conflicts, as each group strove for supremacy in an ever changing territorial profile. As early as 1000 A.D. a Zedlitz was the commandant of the Plassenburg near Culmbach, and Hinko von Zedlitz was a minister and advisor to Duke Miecislaus of Poland in 1173. At the marriage of the Princess von Meranien and Duke Heinrich I in 1200, Tietze von Zedlitz and his family were moved out of their ancestral seat in the Voigtland and into Silesia.
