The surname Whitsell was first found in Lanarkshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Lannraig) a former county in the central Strathclyde region of Scotland, now divided into the Council Areas of North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, and the City of Glasgow, where they held a family seat on the lands of Whiteside from very early times. 1

Further south in England, records there show Richard Whitside, Cambridgeshire in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 and Willelmus Whitesyde in the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379. 2
