The name Weill is of uncertain origins; some scholars find it to be derived Old Norse, while it is also thought to be derived from the Latin "villa," meaning a country house or estate. There are several places so named, located in present day Baden, Wurttemberg, and Bavaria.

Early Origins of the Weill family

The surname Weill was first found in Swabia and Austria, where the name came from aristocratic origins, and gained a significant reputation for its contribution to the emerging mediaeval society. Chronicles mention a Hermann von Weiler, as being present at the founding of the monastery of St. George in the Black Forest. His family line became known as Weiler zu Weiler (a city near Heilbronn,) and many members held the position of Priori of the cloister Weiler in Blauthale, which the family founded in the 11th century. A Burkhard Weiler was the Abbot of Sinsheim in 1468; Wolf von Weiler (1508-1585) accompanied Duke Christoph von Wuerttemberg on a campaign in France, and Dietrich von Weiler (1542-1602,) the chief steward and private tutor to the Duke of Wuerttemberg, united estates of numerous branches into his own hands. This surname spread and became more prominent as branches of Weill traveled and acquired distant estates, some in foreign countries, always elevating their social status by their great contributions to society.
