The name Tompsett is a diminutive of Thomas as in "Thomas-et." "The formation must be old, but examples are late." [1] "The 'p' in Thompsett is intrusive, as in Thompson. Although there cannot be the shadow of doubt about the origin of this surname, I have not come across any early instances." [2]

The surname Tompsett was first found in London where Nicholas Peter Thomaset married Sarah Morgan at St. George Hanover Square in 1792. In Canterbury Cathedral, records show Charlotte Thomsett baptised her son, Frederic John in 1801. Also, in Canterbury, we found Charles Norley married Ann Tomsett in 1809. [2]
