Early Origins of the Tomaso family

The surname Tomaso was first found in Dalmatia, a Kingdom of the Austro-Hungarian empire on the north west Balkan Peninsular on the Adriatic Sea. Originally occupied by the Romans in 12 A.D. It emerged in 1918 as part of the Serb Croat state. It became Austro-Hungarian until 1102, when the Venetian influence was strong. It came under direct rule from Venice in 1402 until 1797. A Brief occupation during the Napoleonic period found it as part of the French province of Illyria. The mid 18th century found it again under the Austro-Hungarian house. In 1912 it sought affiliation with the Serb\Croatian elements. The Nazi occupation found it was ceded to Mussolini in 1941.
