Early Origins of the Thistlethwait family

The surname Thistlethwait was first found in Yorkshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Thistlethwaite, a village in northern Yorkshire, which at the time of the taking of the Domesday Book survey in 1086 also included parts of Cumberland and Westmorland. In the latter half of the 15th century this family name removed to Wiltshire in the south, and established their seat at Winterslaw. Since then they have ranked as one of the most influential proprietors in the South of England and have allied with the most eminent family names.
