Early Origins of the Suriani family

The surname Suriani was first found in Castrogiovanni a town in the province of Enna in Sicily. The history goes back to 397 B.C. Cicero speaks of it as a place of some importance. It was taken by the Saracens in 859, and by the Normans in 1087. The cathedral is of interest but there are no remains of the famous temple of Demeter. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was of itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry.
