Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Charles Stewart, a Scottish prisoner sent to Boston in 1651; Alexander Stewart, a Jacobite captured at Preston, banished to the plantations, transported from Liverpool to South Carolina aboard the "Susannah" in 1716.
