When the ancestors of the Stableford family emigrated to England following the Norman Conquest in 1066 they brought their family name with them. They lived in Leicestershire, at Stapleford.

The surname Stableford was first found in Leicestershire where they held a family seat at Stapleford from very early times, and were conjecturally descended from Henry de Ferrers who was a Norman noble from Ferrieres-St-Hilaire in Bacquepuits in Normandy and were known as the Lords of Ferrers. This noble was granted the lands of Stapleford.
