Like many surnames, the name Shacklock is occupational in origin, meaning that the first bearer of the name took it because it pertained to his profession. In this case, there are two possible occupations that could be associated with the name. The name comes from the middle English word "schaklock," meaning "fetters" or "chains." It therefore seems likely that the first bearer of the name was either a manufacturer of such shackles, or perhaps a jailer. Another possibility is that the name comes from "shake locks" and was a nickname for someone with long hair who had the habit of shaking back his locks.

Early Origins of the Shacklock family

The surname Shacklock was first found in Gloucestershire, where Richard Schakeloc was recorded in the Pipe Rolls in 1187. Another man of the same name (it is possible, but highly unlikely that they are the same man) was recorded in the Assize Rolls of Lancaster in 1246. Robert Shakeloc was recorded in the Assize Rolls of Staffordshire in 1227. Adam Schakelokes was listed in the Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield in 1316. 1

Shacklock Spelling Variations

Endless spelling variations are a prevailing characteristic of Norman surnames. Old and Middle English lacked any definite spelling rules, and the introduction of Norman French added an unfamiliar ingredient to the English linguistic stew. French and Latin, the languages of the court, also influenced spellings. Finally, Medieval scribes generally spelled words according to how they sounded, so one person was often referred to by different spellings in different documents. The name has been spelled Shacklock, Shatlock, Shadlock, Shakeloc, Schakeloc and many more.

Migration of the Shacklock family

To escape the political and religious persecution within England at the time, many English families left for the various British colonies abroad. The voyage was extremely difficult, though, and the cramped, dank ships caused many to arrive in the New World diseased and starving. But for those who made it, the trip was most often worth it. Many of the families who arrived went on to make valuable contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. An inquiry into the early roots of North American families reveals a number of immigrants bearing the name Shacklock or a variant listed above: the $ family, who settled along the eastern coast of North America.
