The surname Pettingill was first found in Suffolk where Walterus filius Portingalliae was listed in the Curia Regis Rolls of 1201. William Potagal was recorded in the Curia Regis Rolls for Leicestershire in 1214, and Symon Petingal appears at Oseney, Oxfordshire in 1278. 1

Of note was Francis Lewis (1713-1802), American merchant and a Founding Father of the United States. His mother was Anne Lewis (née Pettingale) of Newport.
