Early Origins of the Pembridge familyThe surname Pembridge was first found in Herefordshire at Pembridge, a parish, and formerly a borough, in the union of Kington, hundred of Stretford where the surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Pembridge, held by Albert of Marlborough, from Ralph, the Earl of Hereford, descended from Ralph de Gael, a powerful Breton Baron, Lord of the Castle of Guader, of Montfort who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. The Domesday Book also lists the parish as Penbruge and the name possibly meant "bridge of a man called Pena or Paegna," from the Old English personal name + "brycg." 1 At early times some of the family moved to the parish of Tong in Shropshire as records show "the church is in the decorated style, with a spire rising from the centre, and is a fine specimen of ancient monastic architecture. It originally belonged to the abbey of Shrewsbury, and was purchased in 1411 by Isabel, relict of Sir Fulk Pembridge, Knt., who, with others, rebuilt the edifice.
